Since 1984, the BMW M5 has emerged as the classic representative of high performance sedans that prefer not to stand out for its sporting potential. Previous generations of the BMW M5The various generations of the BMW M5 have always possessed pure race genes and have developed in an impressive way both on the road and on the road. The new BMW M5 represents the sixth generation of the most powerful version of the 5 Series. And, like previous versions, this new model promises to follow the BMW M GmbH record of producing characteristic sports vehicles that can truly be used in day to day. Then look back over the previous five generations of the BMW M5.
1984: BMW M5 E28S
In 1979, BMW Motorsport GmbH had already introduced the M535i, a particularly sporty version of the BMW 5 Series, and thus continued in 1984 with another M535i based on the successor to the E12 (E28), before the first generation of the BMW M5 the E28S) in autumn of that same year. It was propelled by the celebrated four-valve inline four-valve engine with a displacement of 3.5 liters and 213 kW (286 hp) of power, which had also been tested in racing and resembled M1, a sports car with engine. Equipped with individual butterfly valves, the engine drove the original M5 from 0 to 100 km / h in just 6.5 seconds and reached a top speed of 245 km / h. Thus, the first BMW M5 became the fastest series produced four-door sedan in history.
1988: BMW M5 E34S / E34 / 5S
The introduction of the second generation of the M5 (the E34S) in 1988 meant the increase of power by BMW Motorsport GmbH. With its inline six-cylinder engine and a displacement of up to 3.6 liters, the new car developed 235 kW (315 hp); enough to drive the M5 for the first time up to 250 km / h. An update of this vehicle in 1992 (known as the E34 / 5S) meant the increase of the displacement up to 3.8 liters and the power up to 254 kW (340 hp). And, since 1992, the BMW 5 Series was also available in a Touring version, whose rarity (produced just under 900 units) has made it a very appreciated classic.
1998: BMW M5 E39S
The sporting subsidiary of BMW AG, renamed BMW M GmbH in 1993, remained true to its tradition with the third generation of the M5, introduced in 1998. The BMW M5 E39S shared all the styling characteristics of its predecessors. However, underneath the hood of this new vehicle was a V8 four-valve engine with five liters of displacement, which delivered a maximum of 299 kW (400 hp) and 500 Nm of maximum torque to the rear wheels through a box six-speed manual transmission. The maximum speed of this new BMW M5, which took 5.3 seconds to go from 0 to 100 km / h, was once again electronically limited to 250 km / h.
2005: BMW M5 E60 / E61
For the fourth BMW M5 (E60), M GmbH relied on a newly developed, high-performance V10 engine with five liters of engine capacity, which reached its maximum power of 378 kW (507 hp) at an extraordinary 7,750 rpm. This four-valve engine propelled the fourth generation of the BMW M5 from 0 to 100 km / h in just 4.7 seconds. For the first time, drivers of the BMW M5 could deactivate the speed limiter by adding the M Driver package, which allowed the BMW M5 to reach a top speed of 305 km / h. Another added element was the sequential automatic gearbox M (SMG) with seven speeds and the Launch Control system to achieve the maximum acceleration from stopped. This BMW M5 was also available in the Touring version (E61) from 2007.
2011: BMW M5 F10M
The fifth generation of the BMW M5 (the F10M) came on the scene in 2011. As a replacement for the V10 engine, this version mounted a 4.4 liter bi-turbo V8 that allowed the BMW M5 to reach new heights. The new BMW M5 was now developing almost twice the power (517 kW - 560 hp) of the original BMW M5. Its maximum torque of 680 Nm was also practically twice that offered by the E28S (340 Nm). M TwinPower Turbo technology enabled the latest BMW M5 with a seven-speed M double-clutch shift from 0 to 100 km / h in just 4.3 seconds and reach a maximum of 315 km / h. The improvements followed in 2013 thanks to the M5 Competition Package, which allowed to reach the 423 kW (575 hp) of power. And in 2014 came the model for the special edition "30 Jahre M5" (30 years of M5), limited to 300 units, generating 441 kW (600 hp) and paying homage to the original BMW M5 E28S.
2017: BMW M5 F90
In the new BMW M5 (F90), BMW M GmbH writes the following chapter in a success story that began more than 30 years ago and is based on a seemingly simple recipe: unparalleled sport performance and extraordinary usability assembled into one higher.
